Everybody will travel in their own way but there are in my opinion some guidelines which will make the travel life a bit easier to handle.
The first thing everybody thinks about is the cost. Hotels are very expensive if you want to stay in hotel for a couple of months. There is another disadvantage when you stay in a hotel, it is much harder to meet other people. Because of these 2 reasons I stay in hostels.
So how do I select a hostel? The best app for finding a hostel is hostelworld. I don’t go for the cheapest hostels, because then everything will be very basic. In cheaper countries like Poland I’ll try to find a private room for myself. For example, in Warsaw I found a private room with met pen bathroom for 35 euro’s per night. In other countries like Portugal, a private room will be far more expensive. In countries like this I’ll find a 4 bed dorm. This will cost between 20 and 25 euro’s a night.
My age is 34 and I don’t want to stay at the party hostels where half of the people are drunk at midnight. For this I look at the reviews. The age is mentioned in every review and when I see too much of the 18-24 age, I will skip the hostel. Also, reading the reviews will give you a good idea what kind of hostel it is. In Porto where I am now Im staying in the Being Porto Hostel and in my guess, the average age is about 30. There are some younger people but also older then me so it is a nice mix. The last thing I look at is the location. I like to be just a bit out of the city center with a maximum of 3 km. The party hostels will be right in the city center. Most of the time the breakfast is included with the price.
When you’re staying with 3 other people in the room, the chances are there that somebody will snore. The thing you don’t want to go cheap on is earplugs. Buy proper ones! Mine were about 15 euro’s and it is a life saver for me. It helps me to have a normal night.
