I’ve stayed 1 day in the Michelberger hotel in Berlin and overall, it was a good experience. I arrived around 12:00 and I wasn’t sure if it was possible to check in already. The room was available and it was no problem that I was a bit early. When I was walking up to my room, I was amazed with how big the place actually is, there are a lot of rooms in the hotel.
I booked the standard room and I paid in front for the room. The room was 80 euro’s which wasn’t that bad. Entering the room, it is quite small and there isn’t really a place to sit down, besides on the bed. The sealing is very high which is nice. The room was connected to the courtyard and with a lot of windows that you can open, it was nice to see it, especially in the evening. The shower does have a window to the room, so if you’re staying there with a friend, watch out!
After a nice shower I slept for an hour and at around 2 I went for lunch. At the MIchelberger restaurant you can order a lunch plate for 12 euro’s. You don’t get a lot of food, but you will get some small bites and it tasted pretty good! Also, they import their own coconut water and it’s called the “fountain of youth“. The taste is pretty good, but you have to drink it cold.
After lunch I went out and the hotel is very close to Kreuzberg and a piece of the Berlin wall. It’s fun to just walk around in Kreuzberg. There are so many bars, restaurants and clubs there so you can look what you can do in the evening.
At around 7:30 in the evening I went to the restaurant for dinner. It was very busy and almost every place was reserved, which is a good sign! There was a place for me at the bar and that was fine. The menu consists out of smaller dishes like tapas, and they will advise you to get at 2 or 3 dishes. I got 2 dishes, a vegetable one with broccolini, black cabbage and pumpkin seed. In my opinion, it doesn’t look so good, it’s just piled up on the plate and also, the broccolini was a bit undercooked. The second dish was lamb, chicory, black garlic and nam jim. This dish didn’t work for me at all, it was a weird combination with the sauce. The black garlic was actually pretty good. To be frank, I was a bit dissapointed. It is not that cheap, especially for Berlin and it under delivered. You can get better food for half the money somewhere in Kreuzberg.
In the evening the hotel will get even more beautiful. You can be in the courtyard until 11 in the evening and as you can see in the header, it looks very pretty. The beds are quite comfortable and you will be allright when you will sleep for a number of days on it.
I woke up quite late and decided not to go for the breakfast at the hotel. It will cost 16 euro’s and with my experiences during dinner, I’m pretty sure you can find some nice bakerys in Kreuzberg where you can get breakfast for at least half of it.
I checked out at 11 but my train left at 1 in the afternoon, so I stayed in the bar of the hotel and that was very nice. Had some good coffee and I just could sit and relax, you will not get bothered. It is also nice of watching other people being there. The hotel is an attraction for some tourists and it’s fun to see how they will enter the place.
My conclusion is, yes, I would recommend staying here, have a drink at the bar or go and have some lunch, but for dinner, just walk 500 metres and you will find better and cheaper places!
