I slept reasonable and I set my alarm at 7:30 to wake up. After a couple of times snoozing I stood up, got some breakfast and went out.
My feet were hurting but I decided to push on. The trail was quite allright, sometimes it got wet but I was getting used to that. It was a warm day and I had to drink a lot of water. My guess is that I drank 5 litres of water during the day.
The mosquitoes were getting active. I had some DEET protection with so I put it on me. This helped but at the end of the day I had like 40 spots, mostly on my shoulders. They will sting right through your clothes.
After 12 hours (2 hours of breaktime) I arrived at Nikkaluokta. Luckily there was a simple cabin available.
The last couple of days the question “What to do” was going through my head. The E1 trail was a hard trail with all the weather and I think it was a good decision to come down to Abisko. After hitting deep snow again here and with more on the way I decided again to change the route. Some days were quite bad and after hiking 3 weeks like this, I wasn’t fun for me anymore. Also, my feet were getting in a bad shape, om both feet, the bone behind the big toe has swollen, so I needed at least some rest days.
That is why I decided to go back to The Netherlands again. Perhaps I underestimated the hiking in these circumstances but the main thing, I wasn’t enjoying myself anymore.
I don’t regret trying to do this, also I will keep traveling (after some rest) but it probably will be something else.
Because I’m not in a hurry to get home I decided to go with the night train to Stockholm and spend a day there. After that a night train to Copenhagen and from here a plane to Groningen airport.
The next days I will post some beautiful pictures from day 2 and 3 and when I’m back I will upload some short clips I shot.
I will let you know what my next traveling plans will be!
