One of the biggest challenges during my trip is food. How much food do I need to take with me at which moment? Luckily for me some other people has figured out where you can buy food and how many days you will need. So I have a reasonable good idea now how the planning looks like.
I’m not a small person and what I’ve read online I will probably need between 2750 en 3000 calories per day. It’s quite normal that I will have to carry food for at least 5 days, so the weight and the volume is important. Basicly everything that has got water in it you should not consider taking with you, you can add water on the trail. 100 grams of food should at least contain 330 calories on average.
The big question is, what kind of food are you gonna get? Most of the people I talk to assume I’m taking meals you can get at outdoor shops and you just have to add water to it. Here in The Netherlands the big brand is Outdoor Adventure. A meal will cost between €5,50 and €6,- and for this you’ll get about 600 calories. When you need 3000 calories, the cost of food per day will be close to €30,- per day. This is far too much. Also, what you should consider is the carbage. Every meal has it’s own sack and your carbon foodprint will be a lot higher on the trail. In my opinion, when you’re walking in nature, you should try to keep your footprint as small as possible.
For the first 5 days I’m taking food with me from The Netherlands. I’ve been to a normal supermarket to get my food. I’ve chosen food with a lot of energy in it, as you can see in the screenshot below.
