In previous posts I’ve told about my personal life. Working as an IT Consultant, renting an appartment and so on, living like a normal 33 year old Joe. The idea for traveling for a longer time, I’ve had that idea for at least a couple of years. It comes down to making a decision to go for it, and you can only do it yourself, No one will make that decision for you. I’ll write a post in the future about this.
My thru hike will start in 2 and a half months and the impact of this is starting to show on my personal life. The biggest thing now is that I’ve decided that I’m canceling the rent of my appartment by the end of april. That means that in a month I’m basicly homeless. I’m fortune enough that my family understands what I want to do so from may until I leave I can stay with my family.
Last week I started with putting my stuff in boxes. I’ve lived here for 6 years (or so) and although is not a big appartment, I did collect a lot of stuff I simply don’t need or want to take with me. Selling some stuff is also a good way to have a bit more budget for the trip, but second hand stuff goes cheap so I didn’t made a lot of money doing that. After this I’ve also thrown away quite a lot of stuff. I’ve done some reading on the lightweight lifestyle and it feels good not to have so much stuff.
It’s also nice to go through your old stuff. I’ve found tickets from previous trips, old maps and so on. The thing I’m liking the most is finding my very old iPod mini (first generation). I also found a charger for it and it still works and it got 835 songs on it! I’m taking it with me the coming weeks to listen to the old, sometimes bad songs. My guess that it’s at least 10 years old 🙂
