I’m not really good in any sport, but I like to do more then one. All of the sports that I like are outside and they have the tendency to be a bit dangerous. The main sport for me is mountainbiking alltough I do like rafting and I don’t mind to be up in the mountains either. I was searching for a multipupose helmet to protect my head. Quickly I found that there weren’t a lot of helmets that could do it all.
The one helmet I found quickly is the Kong Scarab and it fulfills 3 standards for biking, climbing and rafting. In my search I didn’t found a lot more helmets with these specs. Kong is an Italian company and you can see that in the design of the helmet, it’s pretty gorgeous! So after some thinking (it’s not cheap) I decided to order the helmet.
I’ve been using this helmet now for 3 months and I like it a lot. It weighs only 245 grams so when you’re active you won’t notice it on your head. You can take the inner fabric out to clean it, make it fresh again. I’ve attached it to my backpack while traveling and that went well. There are 2 small things that I don’t like. When you are for example mountainbiking and going over some rough terrain and you are bouncing on the bike, you will hear some sqeeking noises from the helmet moving around. Also while mountainbiking through the forrest some branches are hanging low and it’s hitting the helmet. I’ve got a couple of very small punts where the lacquer is beaten off. I guess it’s normal but it’s a shame for this nice looking helmet.
When you look at the helmet you can see it’s design is a mixture from different styles. You’ve got the venting holes from a biking helmet and the flat closed top from a climbing helmet. The vents are important for biking and in the times I’ve been using it, I haven’t been very hot under the helmet so the vents that are there are enough for me.
Conclusion: It is an expensive helmet, but it’s cheaper then buying three different helmets so it’s works for me. If you only gonna do 1 sports you are better off buying the specific helmet because this one is a bit of a compromize. When you are like me and you like different sports, there is no better choice then the Kong Scarab helmet!
