As you can read in a previous post, the first backpack I bought was enormous! 75L expandable to 100 litres. After I was getting more and more information about preparing for a thru hike, I quickly realized that I had the wrong pack, too heavy and too big. So I bought a new pack.
When you really start preparing for a thru hike, each gram is important so it is wise to create a gear list with all the details on it, including the weight. When you’ve done that, then you can really see how much weight you will be carrying on your back. I had, and still have too much weight in my pack.
The one thing I noticed on my gear list is that I had top much weight in clothes on it. Also, when I look at my other gear, it will really keep me warm, probably too warm. Being warm is certainly a good thing, there is no need to bring more then what you need.
Like many of you I read about packing your fears. At the moment I saw my gear list I realized that being cold is my fear. So how do you know when you’re carrying too much? Luckily you can Google the average weather temperatures for where you are going and you can adjust your gear for this. I’ll probably make a winter package so when it’s really getting cold someone can send the warm clothes to me.
My fear for being cold isn’t gone completely. For example, my sleeping bag is a bit too warm and I could get a lighter one. But I’m not gonna do that!
