As I told before, the first tent that I’ve bought was a Sierra Designs Lightning 2. I got it on a good deal and the specs were reasonable good, so I thought, let’s give it a try. I’ve been out with that tent for a couple of times but it isn’t ideal for me. First off all, it is a 2 season tent and that’s not going to be enough for my upcoming trip. I didn’t realize it at the time that this would be important 🙂
I am quite tall, almost 2 metres long. so living space is important for me. It is possible for me to sit straight up in the tent, so that was a plus. The walls of the tent are not vertical, so when I lay down and move my feet, I’ll hit the tent with my sleeping bag, so the bag will get a bit more wet at my feet. It is hard enough to keep a down bag as dry as possible, this is not gonna help. There is also only one entrance so if the wind is turning a bit you can get if face on.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad tent, it’s great for hiking with reasonable to good weather, but it”s not great for my upcoming trip.
So after some searching, I’ve bought the MSR Hubba Hubba NX. It is a light tent, it only weighs 1,7 kg. You can go a bit lighter for a 2 person tent, but it will be more expensive and it will compromise on comfort. Not just in the tent but also with pitching the tent. This tent is easy to pitch. First you lay the inner tent on the flour. There is only one pole and you click it together and lay it on the inner tent. You attach the inner tent to the poles and you cover it with the outer tent and attach that to the poles. For bad weather I think it’s a good plan to get 4 more guy ropes and 4 pegs.
There is a lot of space in the tent! Also, the walls go vertically up for about 30 centimetres. This is not only ideal for long people but also for storing stuff in the tent. It’s also possible for me to sit straight up in the tent, which is nice for bad weather days. During my last trip I’ve used the tent also in snow. This was not a problem and I think it kept me warmer because snow isolated quite good. Because it is a lightweight tent, you will have be a bit more carefull with it. The materials are light and I’m guessing a bit more delicate also.
My first impressions are very good! The weight is good and there is a lot of space inside. It’s also easy to pitch. The normal price is a bit costly but I had no problems to find a good deal on it.
