First of all, I’m a watch guy. I like a nice looking good quality mechanical watch. I’ve had a number of different watches. A conservative guess is between 30 and 40 watches. When you look at my plans, a watch can help in some situations….. I think.
One of my first thoughts was a Suunto watch. Looked at the watches with GPS functionality. These watches are almost smart watches. You can install apps and so on. A big downside is the battery time. With normal use it will be 3 to 5 days with the GPS on. This is for me too much of a hassle. The Suunto Core (all black) hasn’t got GPS and a battery time of a year. You can change the battery yourself so that is a plus. The downside of the Suunto Core is the water resistance, which is only 30 metres.
I’m a member of a Dutch watch forum called “horlogeforum.nl” and I posted the question: Which watch for traveling? And I got a lot of suggestions. Some where good, some were not so good. The watch that I’ve put at the top of the list is the G-Shock Rangeman 9400. The normal price is around 300 euro’s.
There are muliple reasons for this choice. First of all, the functions. It has an compas, altimeter, barometer and a number of other functions that are useful. It’s also charged by the light, so you don’t have to change a battery, it’s water resistance to 200 metres and it is almost indestructable. I will wait for a good deal or a used one.
